Steve J Tenai is a partner of Aird & Berlis LLP. His practice focuses on corporate and securities related litigation and he has represented companies and directors/officers over a broad range of commercial issues. Steve has defended public companies and/or directors/officers in numerous securities class actions including for Nortel Networks Corporation, Bell Canada International, Royal Group Technologies Limited, SunOpta Inc., Gildan Activewear, SNC Lavalin, ArcelorMittal and Baffinland Iron Mines. He also is experienced in responding to investigations by securities regulators, including within the context of cross-border investigations by securities and law enforcement agencies.
Steve was a member of the legal team representing BCE before the Supreme Court of Canada concerning the proposed privatization of BCE; represented one of Research In Motion’s senior officers in OSC settlement proceedings relating to option grants; and was a member of the defence team representing Conrad Black on various matters concerning Hollinger Inc. before the Ontario courts. He represented SNC-Lavalin and its outside directors in a $1 billion securities class action relating to alleged misrepresentations over to its controls and procedures around anti-corruption and bribery. Steve has also advised Boards and senior management on litigation risk mitigation strategies, particularly with respect to class action risk. He has previously written and spoken on such topics as coordinating defences and investigations in cross-border securities litigation, trends in class action litigation, the oppression remedy, derivative actions, directors’ and officers’ liability, and civil litigation practice. Steve was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1992 and received his LL.B. from the University of Toronto in 1990 and his LL.M. from the University of Michigan in 2000. He clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada.
