BGen Mazzolin graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada with a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) in 1984. He served with the Special Service Force in Petawawa, Ontario in various appointments as a Troop Commander, Regimental Signal Officer and Operations Officer for the AMF(L) Battle Group National Support Element. He subsequently served at National Defence Headquarters with project management responsibilities for Canadian tactical communications systems. He completed studies at the Royal Military College of Science at Shrivenham, England earning a Master of Science degree with specialization in Electronics and Guided Weapon Systems. He then returned to project management duties and completed studies at the Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff College.

He subsequently deployed to Somalia with the Canadian Airborne Regiment serving as the Liaison Officer to the Italian Army “Folgore” Parachute Brigade and later served as Officer Commanding Canadian Joint Force Headquarters and Signal Squadron Somalia. He was awarded the Italian Army Chief of General Staff Commendation for professionalism and courage for actions in Somalia. Upon return to Canada in 1993, he served as the senior Information Technology Security Engineer for DND and assumed duties at 79 Communication Regiment as the Deputy Commanding Officer and was involved in the standup of Canada’s deployable strategic communications extension unit. In 1999 he completed studies at the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College in Toronto and took up duties within the American, British, Canadian and Australian (ABCA) Armies Program in Washington, D.C., responsible for Communication, Command, Control, Computing and Intelligence Systems Interoperability. While in Washington, he completed a Ph.D. program in Engineering Management and was awarded the United States Meritorious Service Medal for his work while serving with the ABCA Program.

In 2002, he was appointed the Acting Director of Information Management Security for the Department of National Defence, and later assumed command of Canadian Forces Station Leitrim and the Canadian Forces Signals Intelligence Operations Centre. Upon promotion to Colonel, he was appointed Director Land Command Systems Program Management where he was responsible for the Canadian Army C4ISR Engineering and Acquisition Program. He was appointed to the Order of Military Merit in the grade of Officer in 2009 and later completed the National Security Program at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto earning a Master of Arts degree in Security and Defence Management Policy. He was then appointed Commander of the Canadian Forces Information Operations Group and in 2012, was promoted to his current rank and appointed Director General Information Management Operations/Deputy Canadian Armed Forces J6, responsible for the operation of Canadian Forces strategic CIS, Signals Intelligence, Network Operations and Electronic Warfare capabilities. He is now posted to United States Cyber Command at Fort Meade, Maryland, USA.

BGen Mazzolin is a licensed Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario, and is married to Lia (nee Bidinost) and has two grown children.
